iPhone app: Terms of Use (EULA)

The Liao iPhone app is licensed under Apple's Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement (EULA). This is the Terms of Use (EULA) for the app; Liao does not use a separate custom app licence.

The service terms below explain Liao's website, account, subscriptions and hosted AI features. They supplement, and do not replace or limit, Apple's Standard EULA or any mandatory consumer rights.

What these terms cover

Liao AI is a product operated by Raven Amiatu, an Australian sole trader (ABN 28 271 300 438). In these terms, "Liao", "we", "us", and "our" refer to Raven Amiatu as the operator of the service.

These terms apply when you use the Liao website, make a purchase, or use the Liao iPhone app and related services. By creating an account, purchasing, or using Liao, you agree to these terms.

You must be at least 13 and legally able to agree to these terms. Where local law requires parental or guardian consent, you may use Liao only with that consent. You are responsible for your account, device, sign-in method, and the accuracy of information you provide.

The Founding Pass

Founding Pass purchases are closed and activation is currently unavailable. If you already bought a pass, email raven@liaoai.app from the address used at checkout for help with access or a refund. The terms below describe existing purchases.

Liao is available through the App Store, subject to country or region and device availability. The Liao Founding Pass is an optional one-time US$99 purchase of 12 months of Liao Premium. It is not an auto-renewing subscription, lifetime access, investment, or ownership interest.

The price is charged when checkout is completed. The 12-month Premium period starts on your first eligible sign-in to the release app using the account linked to your Founding Pass, after Liao is publicly available in the App Store country or region associated with the Apple Account you use for Liao. Buying the pass before launch does not start that period. Later sign-ins and purchase restores do not restart it.

After the included 12 months, a Founding Pass holder may choose to renew Liao Premium for US$99 per year while paid Premium access remains continuously active. The Founding Pass itself does not renew automatically. We will show the available renewal method and obtain your consent before any further charge. If paid Premium access ends or lapses, the locked Founding rate may no longer be available.

Check that Liao is available in your Apple Account's App Store country or region before purchasing. If Liao is discontinued, cannot be supplied in that country or region, or we determine that the pass cannot be honoured, we will cancel and refund the unactivated purchase.

You may cancel for a full refund at any time before activation by emailing raven@liaoai.app from the address used at checkout. Activation starts the 12-month period and ends this unconditional pre-activation cancellation right. After activation, ordinary refund and consumer-guarantee rules apply.

Any TestFlight beta testing is free and separate. Buying a Founding Pass does not guarantee or prioritise a beta invitation.

Payments, subscriptions, and refunds

Prices, billing periods, included access, trial terms, and renewal conditions are shown before you confirm a purchase.

App Store subscriptions are billed by Apple and renew automatically unless cancelled before the next billing date. You can manage or cancel them through your Apple Account. Removing Liao or deleting your Liao account does not cancel an App Store subscription.

The Founding Pass is sold by Raven Amiatu and managed through RevenueCat Billing, with Stripe processing the payment. The initial pass is charged once in US dollars and does not renew automatically. An optional later renewal is a separate purchase at the locked Founding rate described above. Checkout shows the final amount due before payment; taxes, required store charges, currency conversion, or bank fees may affect the final amount in your country or currency.

Deleting your Liao account does not automatically refund a Founding Pass and may affect the ability to restore or activate paid access. Contact support before deletion if you need help with a purchase.

App Store refund requests can be submitted through Apple. For a Founding Pass or another website purchase, contact raven@liaoai.app. Nothing in these terms excludes a consumer guarantee, refund right, or other remedy that cannot legally be excluded.

Personal use and service limits

Your Liao account gives you personal access to the hosted language-learning service while your access remains valid. The licence to the iPhone application itself is governed by Apple's Standard EULA above.

Paid plans include 35 minutes of conversation time each week, shared across Liao Chat and Roleplay sessions and their main, side and practice chats, plus a separate 10-minute Liao Coach bank. Typing during a Liao Coach session uses that same session time. Time runs from session start to finish, including chat switches.

Unused minutes do not roll over. Subscription banks refill every seven days from the verified original subscription start, independently of monthly or annual billing renewals. For an eligible Founding Pass, the first linked app sign-in after launch activates the pass and starts its weekly clock. The app shows the next refill and available time. The one-time preview is separate.

Individual sessions and other voice features also have the limits shown in the app; restoring a purchase or signing in again does not reset used time.

You may not resell or share paid access between unrelated accounts, automate extraction, bypass access or security controls, interfere with the service, or use Liao to provide a competing or commercial service without written permission. We may apply reasonable restrictions to automated, shared, abusive, commercial, or security-threatening use.

AI limitations and acceptable use

Liao uses artificial intelligence and speech recognition. It can misunderstand audio, make mistakes, give unnatural phrasing, repeat itself, or produce inaccurate or inappropriate responses. Pronunciation scores and translations are estimates, not authoritative assessments.

Liao is a practice tool, not a substitute for a qualified teacher, translator, doctor, lawyer, financial adviser, emergency service, or other professional. Verify information before relying on it in an important situation.

Do not use Liao to break the law, harm or exploit others, infringe rights, distribute malicious code, obtain unauthorised access, evade safeguards, or generate or share content that is illegal or seriously harmful. We may investigate suspected misuse and restrict access where reasonably necessary to protect users, Liao, or our providers.

Your content and privacy

You keep any rights you have in content you provide. You give us and our service providers the limited permission needed to receive, process, transmit, reproduce, and format that content to operate Liao, provide the feature you request, personalise your experience, support you, prevent abuse, and maintain the service.

Our Privacy Policy explains how voice, transcripts, learning information, account details, purchases, and technical information are handled. Do not submit information you do not have the right to share.

Liao content and intellectual property

Liao's software, visual design, branding, curated materials, and other original content are owned by Raven Amiatu or the relevant licensors and are protected by intellectual-property law. Except for the personal right to use Liao, no rights are transferred to you.

Liao includes CC-CEDICT dictionary data under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International licence. Other third-party materials remain subject to their applicable licences and notices.

Apple App Store terms

For the iPhone app, Apple's Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement applies in addition to these terms. If a mandatory App Store term conflicts with these terms, the mandatory term controls.

Apple is not responsible for Liao's content, support, maintenance, or claims relating to the app except as required by Apple's standard licence or applicable law.

Service changes and ending access

We may make reasonable changes to improve, secure, or maintain Liao, including changing voices, models, providers, and supported devices. We do not promise uninterrupted or error-free availability.

If we discontinue the paid service or materially reduce its core paid access during an active prepaid period, we will give reasonable notice and provide any refund, extension, or other remedy required by applicable law.

We may restrict or end access for a material breach, legal requirement, or genuine security risk. Except where urgent action is reasonably necessary, we will provide notice and a reasonable opportunity to resolve the issue.

Disclaimers and liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Liao is provided on an "as available" basis without warranties that it will always be accurate, secure, uninterrupted, or suitable for a particular purpose.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the operator of Liao is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, exemplary, or consequential loss arising from the service. These limits do not apply where liability cannot legally be limited, including mandatory consumer guarantees.

Changes and contact

We may update these terms as Liao or the law changes. Revised terms apply prospectively and do not remove rights that have already accrued. We will provide reasonable notice where a change materially disadvantages an active paid subscriber.
